Her Story
Rafaela Aponte-Diamant
Rafaela Aponte-Diamant is an Italian-Israeli billionaire and co-founder of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Group, one of the largest and most influential shipping conglomerates in the world — built not through inheritance, but from a single ship and a shared vision.
Born Rafaela Diamant in 1945 in Haifa, then under British rule as Mandatory Palestine, she moved with her family to Geneva, Switzerland, while still a child. Her father worked as a banking executive, giving her an early window into global finance, and she grew up fluent in Italian, French, German, and English in one of Europe's most international cities.
In 1969, during a trip to Capri, she met Gianluigi Aponte, a ship captain from Naples. What began as a chance meeting became a lifelong personal and professional partnership. The following year, the couple founded the Mediterranean Shipping Company, purchasing their first vessel — a small second-hand cargo ship — with a loan secured against their combined ambition rather than any inherited capital.
While Gianluigi, a former sea captain, took charge of operations, Rafaela built the company's financial and administrative backbone, with a particular focus on the design of its shipping containers. Together, they grew MSC organically over five decades — without mergers or acquisitions — into the world's largest container shipping line, operating roughly 900 vessels and controlling more than a fifth of global container capacity.
Rafaela's creative instincts found their fullest expression in MSC Cruises, the company's luxury cruise division, which grew from a single ship purchase in 1988 into the world's third-largest cruise operator, and the largest still privately owned. She has remained personally involved in the interior design of MSC's ships, bringing her own Mediterranean sensibility to every detail — from the artwork to the fabrics — with the intention of making each space feel as welcoming as it is luxurious.
Today, Rafaela and Gianluigi each hold a 50% stake in MSC, keeping the company entirely family-owned and family-run. Despite the scale of what she has built, Rafaela has maintained a notably private profile, rarely appearing in public-facing company activities — a quiet contrast to the scale of the empire she helped create. As of 2026, Forbes estimates her net worth at $44.5 billion, ranking her the 42nd-richest person in the world, and widely regarded as one of the wealthiest self-made women on the planet.
